How to track ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini send visitors that often show up as referral or direct traffic. Here is how to track ChatGPT traffic in GA4, and where GA4 falls short.

ChatGPT now sends real traffic to websites, but Google Analytics 4 does not have an "AI search" channel by default. Visits land under referral, or under direct when the referrer is stripped. Here is how to track ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics and see it as its own channel.

Step 1: find AI referrers

In GA4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and switch the dimension to Session source. Search for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. ChatGPT links also often carry utm_source=chatgpt.com.

Step 2: create an AI search channel group

  • Go to Admin, Data display, Channel groups, and create a new group.
  • Add a channel called AI search above Referral.
  • Set the condition: Session source matches regex chatgpt|openai|perplexity|gemini|claude|copilot.
  • Save and use the new group in your acquisition reports.

Step 3: tie it to conversions

Mark purchases or sign-ups as key events, then compare the AI search channel against organic and paid. Expect lower volume and higher conversion rates, because people arriving from an AI recommendation have usually already decided.

Where GA4 falls short

  • Visits with no referrer still land in direct, so GA4 undercounts AI traffic.
  • GA4 cannot tell you which prompt or answer sent the visit, or whether you were mentioned at all.
  • Revenue only shows if your e-commerce or payment events are wired up correctly.

StatSip classifies AI search traffic automatically, connects it to payments from Stripe, and shows the prompts where you are winning or losing.
