Answer engine optimization (AEO): a practical guide
Answer engine optimization is how you get picked as the answer in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. A practical AEO guide, plus the AEO tools that measure progress.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your content chosen as the answer by answer engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Google AI Overviews. Classic SEO fights for ten blue links. AEO fights for one or two mentions in a generated answer, so the stakes per question are higher.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO
The terms overlap. SEO targets search rankings. AEO targets direct answers. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the newer name for AEO focused on AI-generated answers. In practice the playbook is the same: be the clearest, most cited source for the questions your buyers ask.
A four-step AEO process
- Pick the questions. List 25 to 50 questions buyers ask before choosing a product like yours, including comparisons and "best X for Y" prompts.
- Baseline your visibility. Run each question across the main answer engines and record whether you appear, your position and who appears instead.
- Fix the gaps. For each question you lose, find the sources the engine cited and either improve your own page or earn a mention on those sources.
- Re-measure weekly. Answers shift as models update and competitors publish, so treat AEO as ongoing, not a one-off project.
Writing for answer engines
- Lead with the answer in the first two sentences.
- Use the question as a heading, then answer it in one short paragraph.
- Include concrete numbers: prices, limits, dates. Engines prefer specific, checkable facts.
- Add FAQ and comparison sections with structured data.
Choosing AEO tools
Good AEO tools track prompts daily across several engines, benchmark competitors and show cited sources. StatSip also measures the visits and revenue that answer engines send, which turns AEO from a visibility score into a channel you can budget for.
